Online gambling fraud in South Africa has increased by more than three times since the beginning of 2025, according to data from verification provider SumSub. The rise coincides with a shift in how operators manage identity checks and regulatory compliance across the region.
Fraudsters now rely on authentic stolen identification documents rather than forged papers, making traditional document verification insufficient. Operators must evaluate multiple data points to confirm user legitimacy. Required checks include device information, digital identity records, transaction history, and behavioral patterns.
Automated monitoring systems are recommended to replace manual review processes and handle the increased verification load.
Regional Comparison and Regulatory Environment
South Africa does not record the highest fraud levels in the African market. Countries such as Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Malawi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo report greater verification challenges. The local regulatory framework adds complexity to compliance efforts. Online casino operations remain prohibited, yet several licensed bookmakers provide casino-style games marketed as sports betting products. The National Gambling Board recently identified compliance violations within 11 of the 13 regional regulatory bodies.The regional increase aligns with broader market trends.
